When I was young, my family would spend each Christmas Day with cousins and aunts and uncles that lived nearby. Each year, one family would host the day and it included lots of food, fun and games. The day started with a Christmas Day church service leading up to a big sit-down dinner which, was usually followed by a hike through a park or woods nearby. I have fond memories of those hikes; if we were lucky, there was snow and we would run ahead of the aunts and uncles and stand near a tree laden with snow. As soon as someone got too close, a branch was given a shake and snow would inevitably land on the unlucky person! When I look back on the Christmas Days of my childhood, my fondest memories are not of the gifts I received, but of the fun I had with family and cousins. – Brenda VanEgmond
Whether you’re celebrating at home with family and friends or at the office with co-workers, it’s important to remember where the spirit of Christmas really lives. You won’t find Christmas in the wreaths, garlands, twinkling lights and neatly wrapped gifts. Certainly these can be a fun part of the holiday season and may add to your joy and excitement, especially if you do your decorating, baking, etc. together. For Christians, Christmas is the celebration of the birth of Jesus long ago; His love is fully realized when you share your heart’s joy and compassion with others. That’s why we come together at Christmas, to share the gifts of the heart. Just as with the very first gift of Jesus, so is it now. Giving of yourself is where the real joy lies, both at Christmas and throughout the year.
We hope, like us, you’ll choose to celebrate Christmas not just with tinsel and presents, but with a focus on truly giving: your time, your attention, your joy. We hope as well, that you’ll carry the memories you make and that spirit of sharing with you throughout the year in all that you do.
Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!
